New S.A. record price for Merino ram |
Fairworld Merino stud of Willem & Acton van Aardt, Cookhouse, has a proud history of nearly a century of dedicated fine wool breeding. This stud broke the S.A. record price for the first time during 1992 when a ram called Foreign Agent was sold for R56 000. The new record was set on 23 February 2011 at the Fairworld Merino ram sale, when Mr. Cornelius Greyling and his son B.P. from the farm Bovenvallei, Wakkerstroom, paid R250 000 for a ram called Barrier. To break the S.A. record price is the dream of almost every stud breeder, but to do it twice in a lifetime is a magnificent achievement.
Barrier, probably one of the most perfect examples of a Merino, measured 14.3µ fibre diameter. What makes Barrier such an outstanding Merino sire, is the fact that he is the ram with the lowest micron wool ever to be auctioned, and has an almost faultless body conformation. The second highest price for the season was also fetched by Fairworld when the Van As Bros of Kinko, Swellendam, paid R50 000 for a son of Barrier. The average price paid for the 63 rams auctioned was R11 905.
The news of the new record price spread like wildfire in farming circles. Not only was the previous highest price of R118 000 smashed, but is it now evident that breeders are prepared to pay top prices for outstanding genetic material. The Merino industry is currently riding the crest of the wave, as wool and mutton prices are the highest ever. Furthermore the country has, except for a few smaller areas, been blessed with very good rains.

The National Woolgrowers Association of South Africa adopted a resolution during the 2007 congress requesting the development of a Code of Best Practice to benchmark quality raw wool production standards against international criteria. Social responsibilities supporting this are addressed.
The Best Practice Reference Manual (BPRM) for wool sheep farming provides a framework of best practice concepts for wool sheep farming in South Africa. The main objective is to ensure sustainable farming practices that incorporate animal welfare, environmental conservation, social acceptability and optimum production with reference to the appropriate legislation that apply to wool sheep producers.
This manual is part of a continuous and dynamic development process, which ultimately ensures the welfare of wool sheep and the wool sheep industry of South Africa. It will be reviewed from time to time to incorporate advances in the understanding of wool sheep physiology and behavior, technological changes in animal husbandry and their relationship to the welfare of wool sheep, as well as changes in good practice for environmental management.
